JULUKA Team...
The Managing Editor of
JULUKA is
Charlene Avis, a writer, marketing, public relations and advertising professional, who has spent the last 2 years in these fields in the U.S. Prior to living in the U.S, she lived in South Africa and the U.K, where she worked in these fields. Her work has been published in many magazines in SA and she is currently writing a book.
Charlene has spent most of her life in SA; in Port Alfred, Johannesburg and Pretoria. Having spent many years observing various cultures attempting to mix and mingle within the shackles of Apartheid, she ultimately left SA to live in the U.K.
After completing her studies in Pretoria and Johannesburg, Charlene gained valuable working experience working in large corporates as well as the media and publishing industries. Whilst living in the U.K, she traveled extensively throughout the world, including her first trip to the U.S. and vowed she could "never" make it home!(never say "never"!) In the U.S, Charlene initially worked for a well-known SA immigration attorney, which afforded her the opportunity to get to know the American marketplace as well as many South Africans in the U.S. However, working with
JULUKA has ultimately opened many doors into the SA market in the U.S. and has connected her with some interesting and powerful South Africans in the country.
Charlene has had the opportunity to talk with many of
JULUKA's thousands of subscribers and learn of their experiences. They often call with story ideas, tips or requesting resources.
Ruan Wannenburg is
JULUKA's publisher. He hails from Pretoria in South Africa and has lived in the U.S. for 11 years.
A Commercial Informations Masters graduate from Tukkies, the University of Pretoria, Ruan has spent over 20 years in the information technology industry. Before emigrating to the U.S, Ruan co-founded, established and later sold a successful consumer electronic business in SA.
Ruan is also the owner of Mindsgate Media,
JULUKA's publishing house. His solid computer background has helped mechanize
JULUKA's infrastructure, as well as the various South African websites that fall under the Mindsgate Media umbrella.
Ruan's passion for words and language motivated him to get involved in the colorful world of magazines. His dreams and vision for
JULUKA are both inspirational and exciting (although we're not quite sure if it was his first job in the U.S. that inspired him to enter the media business...namely that of newspaper deliveries!).
JULUKA and the South African websites have afforded Ruan the opportunity to hold onto his South African culture and his love for the country.
Chak Reddy is responsible for
JULUKA's accounting and technical support. Chak relocated to the U.S. in 1995, having been born, raised and educated in India. After obtaining his degree, he moved Stateside and has been involved in the computer business since.
Chak's 8 years of IT experience, running his own premier software development and consulting firm, targeting Fortune 500 companies, has made him an invaluable member of the
JULUKA team.
When he's not sending out accounts and updating computer systems, he can be found at varsity as he completes him MBA studies.
Krista Corkos finished her schooling in California ,
where she excelled in Creative Writing and Art. She is currently studying Graphic Design ,
Creative Writing and English at college. She is Charlene's right-hand lady, is the Senior
Editorial Assistant and Graphic Designer for
JULUKA . She has
learned many new things from the SA culture, is fascinated by it and the new people she
meets every day. In her words, "When I started working for
JULUKA ,
I had no idea where Cape Town was, now I feel I know each and every little dorpie
in the country!"
JULUKA is totally independent. Our editorial and advertising are also independent of each other. We rely solely on our subscribers and advertisers for our income.
We have often had to report on sensitive issues as well as stories that other parties have begged and even threatened us not to run. We seek the truth - e.g. - if a crime has been committed and it relates to South Africa and we know about it - we are on the story. Our excellent credibility has been established over these past 10 years.
We make every reasonable effort to ensure the accuracy and soundness of the contents of our publication. We do, however, recognize that what we publish is not always the final story - that stories are sometimes evolving - we also sometimes make mistakes - and these are corrected as soon as possible.
